Experiencing Emotions with a Spacious Mind

“The Subtle Body” Teachings in the Dzogchen Tradition

Do you find yourself ……

  • unable to be totally relaxed, always sitting on the edge, ready to jump?
  • restless, feeling guilty when you have nothing to do?
  • constantly swiping your smart phone, even when there’s nothing important to see?
  • having sudden mood change in certain weather, seeing certain things, or smelling certain smell?
  • playing online games to the point of feeling sick, but you simply can’t stop yourself?

If you do, your Subtle Body is out of balance!

In the Tibetan tradition, the subtle body may be best understood as the place where emotions emerge and abide, asserting a tangible effect on the physical body. The subtle body is not about the knowing mind, nor about the sensing body (gross body).  It is “subtle” because it is difficult to detect any particular movements when it is in a balanced state. Yet, when the subtle body’s natural equilibrium gets out of balance, we experience emotions, blockages, anger, ordepression.  If we don’t take care of it, over time the recurring emotions will become unexplainable habitual patterns, until one day they just erupt out of proportion.

The subtle body connects the body and mind, and is the home of the emotions that influences both.   Persistent imbalance has a negative effect on our physical wellbeing as well as our awareness capability.  Finding inner balance requires much more than merely using common sense. Transforming the subtle body needs the heart and mind working together to gently recognize and accept whatever feelings and emotions we experience.  In a balanced state, we are in touch with our “essence love” – an internal feeling of “okayness” or “bliss”, which is unaffected by external phenomenon. This is the foundation of a healthy “self”.

This 3-day teachings aim to introduce the concepts of the gross body, the subtle body and their relationships with the mind; and how they function separately and collectively. Over the years, Rinpoche has developed a unique teaching style, combining western psychology, neurosciences and the Buddhist views.  Through meditation practices Tsoknyi Rinpoche will guide us through the healing process of the unbalanced subtle body due to speediness in modern life style. Learning will be intensive in a retreat environment with a combination of teaching, experiential practices and meditation.

Starting 2017, Tsoknyi Rinpoche has officially incorporated the Subtle Body teaching as a preliminary of the Dzogchen curriculum.  The Subtle Body teaching is now a prerequisite for subsequent Dzogchen teachings, such as Trekcho, Bardo and so forth.

Dzogchen Teachings of Trekchö (Thoroughly cutting through) with Tsoknyi Rinpoche

Trekchö, or cutting through, practice of the Great Perfection, which directly introduces the student to the luminous purity of the mind’s essence.

Trekchö is the thorough cut of cutting through, cutting the obscurations completely to pieces, like slashing through them with a knife. So the past thought has ceased, the future thought hasn’t yet arisen, and the knife is cutting through this stream of present thought. But one doesn’t keep hold of the knife either, one lets the knife go, so there is a gap…Even if only a little piece of the basic state is visible, if it is the genuine, real thing, that is the recognizing of dharmakaya.
